Packaged and ready to eat food will now have front-of-pack label warning signs following a Supreme Court direction.
FSSAI will now show a front-of-pack warning label on packaged food products which contain high levels of sugar, salt, and saturated fat. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India directed FSSAI to implement these changes. The apex court also warned the regulatory body that judicial intervention will follow if these changes are not met.
This directive came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). In this PIL the petitioner argued that the existing nutrition information at the back of the packages are not enough to make an informed choice.
A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan noted that there is a prima facie case that clearer disclosures would serve public health interests. The court has asked FSSAI to file its response within four weeks.
The move comes amid growing concerns about obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases linked to unhealthy diets. The court emphasized that warning labels could help consumers make healthier decisions and reduce lifestyle-related health risks across the country.
